Summer Reading

Summer Reading Program

At Venture Academy, we believe learning doesn’t stop when the school year ends. Our Summer Reading Program encourages students to stay engaged, foster a lifelong love of reading, and continue growing throughout the summer months.

Regular reading helps students maintain the skills they’ve developed during the school year and arrive in the fall ready to learn. It also sparks imagination, expands vocabulary, and builds confidence across all subject areas.

Whether your child is diving into a favorite series, exploring a new genre, or discovering books that match their interests, every page read is an investment in their future. We encourage families to make reading a fun part of their summer routine and look forward to celebrating our students’ reading adventures when they return to campus.

Our summer reading program will have some changes from last year. Please see below for details:

2026 AdVentures in Reading: Summer Edition!

  • The program begins June 6th and goes through August 23rd.
  • All papers and presentations are due to your teacher by August 28th.

School Prizes:

  • The top 2 students with the most minutes from grades 1-2, 3-5, and 6-8 will be recognized
  • The class that logs the most minutes collectively will earn a lunch party!

Summer Reading Requirements

  • Students entering grades 1 and 2 are required to read 800 minutes over the summer.
  • Students entering grades 3 through 8 are required to read 1000 minutes over the summer.
  • For grades 1-5, the Lexia program your child has worked on throughout the school year can count towards the required minutes. Your subscription to Lexia goes through the summer so you can use it at home all summer long!
  • All students will record the minutes they read on the calendar provided and add up the total for the month. You must have the total minutes listed to receive credit for the assignment.
  • A parent/guardian must sign off on the required reading minutes.
  • Students entering grades 5-8 are required to represent one book of their choice they finished over the summer however they want and present it to their teacher and class upon returning to school in the fall. A rubric with the criteria for this project is included.

Optional Bonus Reading Challenges

In addition to the requirements listed, students may choose to participate in some of the following optional activities for a prize incentive. These activities can count towards your required minutes, but do not take the place of the requirements given. Download these challenges below.
